Weekend Book Review: Plain Wisdom: An Invitation into An Amish Home and the Hearts of Two Women

Plain Wisdom: An Invitation into an Amish Home and the Hearts of Two WomenBiographies & Memoirs) by Cindy Woodsmall and Miriam Flaud is a warm and inviting book co-authored by two women, one a New York Times Bestseller author and the other an Old Order Amish wife and mother.

In Plain Wisdom, Cindy and Miriam share little glimpses into their lives and share their stories about family, faith, wisdom, and traditions. Cindy and Miriam became friends through a mutual acquaintance and they share how their first, somewhat awkward meeting led to a deep-seated, faith-based friendship.

I really enjoyed this book. It's one of those books that makes you feel warm and cozy as you are reading it. I really enjoyed the little glimpses that it provided into the Amish way of life. I've always found the Amish very fascinating, and I have so much respect for their choice to live simply.

Each chapter presents a different topic and provides a corresponding Scripture. Then each woman shares a story from their life that relates to the chapter's topic. The chapters are short and sweet, and so this is one of those books that you can pick up and read when you find a few spare minutes. Being a busy mom, I appreciated that about this book.

Another bonus to this book are the recipes that the women share including Amish Friendship Bread, Mom Lee's Shoofly Pie, and Overnight Blueberry French Toast. These recipes are sprinkled throughout the chapters of the book, and the book includes a recipe index in the back.

I really enjoyed this little gem of a book. I loved the insight it gave into the Amish life. I also loved reading about how these two women from such different cultures and backgrounds formed and grew a deep, loving friendship.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.
