Weekend Book Review: A Year With Jesus

I do not typically use devotional-type books in my daily Bible-study time. With limited time, I feel it benefits me more just to get into the raw Word of God rather than take the time to read another human's perspective on a passage of Scripture.

Having said that, though, I do keep several devotional books around to use during those moments in my day when I feel I need a little refocusing, but don't have time to sit down and open up my Bible and concordance.

A Year with Jesus: Daily Readings and Reflections On Jesus' Own Words, by R.P. Nettelhorst, is a collection of 365 devotions that are based upon the words of Christ. Formatted to be read each day of the year, each devotional contains a passage of Scripture in which Christ is speaking, and then a short reflection from Nettelhorst himself on that particular passage.

This devotional was written specifically to highlight the words and actions of Christ and how much He loves His children. The devotionals are meant to encourage, inspire and comfort the reader.

This is an insightful and enjoyable devotional book. I encourage the reader to use this as a supplement to their daily Bible study, but I would highly discourage anyone from using this as a substitution for solid time in the Word itself. Nettelhorst is a man, after all, and any human is subject to the possibility of misinterpreting the Word of God. As I said previously, this would be a great devotional to keep on hand to refer to during the day when you only have a few short moments and you're feeling the need for some inspiration or motivation.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you for sharing you views on this devotional! I think I have this book but I too am trying to get more of the raw Word of God so I have pushed "organized" studies to the wayside. Have a great day!

I reviewed this one too and am using it daily!

I use this, my prayer journal, then do daily bible reading with the kids. Today it was the same scripture we read in homeschool bible class! I like the simpleness of it because I was able to share a few days with Alyssa already. It was simple enough for her level.

Anyways - have a super awesome day Amber! See you next friday!
